Interaction of Water Quality Parameters

All the parameters of water quality, contribute to the overall chemistry and interact with each other . The most important points to remember are :-

  • When Carbon Dioxide ( CO2 ) is dissolved in water, it forms weak carbonic acid and lowers pH.

  • When plants (including algae )in the water system photosynthesise they consume CO2 , give off O2 and raise pH.

  • There is more of the more toxic form of ammonia at higher pH.

  • So when plants and algae are actively photosynthesizing during the day and cease to photosynthesise during the night, we get swings in Dissolved Oxygen as well as swings in pH and if there is ammonia present, we get swings in ammonia toxicity.
